Ensemble 2020
Queensland Ballet, Thomas Dixon Centre.
Ensemble 2020 consists of three segmented columns installed at the Thomas Dixon Centre, home to the Queensland Ballet. Composed of stacked cast concrete blocks, the columns evoke both architectural and bodily forms—their segmentation lending lightness to an otherwise austere structure.
Reliefs of blast-furnace slag, a material that mimics natural rock but originates from industrial waste, appear across the surface. This resemblance to coral resonates with the work’s Queensland setting, subtly linking industry and nature.
The restrained geometry of the columns reflects the adjacent former factory, bridging the old and new architecture. Emerging plant life from each face introduces an organic counterpoint, with selected Queensland species rooting the work in place. Circular gardens at the base capture water drips, further integrating Ensemble into its evolving environment.
